We had our annual team retreat this past week.

One thing Datta and I are so proud of is that we have attracted really awesome people on our team. That hasn’t happened by accident.
It’s been a painful growing process through mistakes we have made in the past, and I want you to learn from our mistakes, and from our research on how to hire great people who will allow you to focus on what you do best.

I’ve worked at companies that overlooked the questions and the process, and experienced great turnover. When I left the corporate world, it was estimated that it cost about $20,000 to hire one employee. Why would anyone want to spend this in constant turnover, versus taking time to go through the preliminary process?

Loved the video, Rachael Jayne. I noticed in the photo that there are 10 women to 1 male (apart from Datta). What do you feel about balancing male and female numbers, or at least redressing a major imbalance, when there are a number of workers ? I’ve noticed that energies can become skewed or imbalanced when there is a predominance of one gender over another.
Yes, we’d love more men on our team. We have only ever received 1 other application from a man for any of our other roles (Except for technical roles). Come on men, where are you? You don’t see there that our 2 part time video filmers and editors aren’t there.

I have not been in the position of hiring, but I was hired at my current job and I would say I admire what they did because they trusted their intuition and gave a chance to potential. Also, my vision on life and work was very important to them. It turned out a great, warm and welcoming environment to work in.

Last month I expanded from being a lone ranger to taking on 4 teams of contractors. I’m hiring by the hour and don’t have the resources to go through the processes you recommend, so I give people small jobs and try them out. I’ve had a few time wasters and some absolute diamonds.
